UM Committee on Relief (UMCOR) helps annual conferences prepare for and coordinate volunteers in the disaster zone. UMCOR’s partner, the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), provides an important source of volunteers.
UMCOR coordinates with UMVIM about when it is appropriate to send teams and which skills are needed in a particular area. UMCOR helps annual conferences or local sites set up a “Call Center” where those wishing to volunteer can find a place to serve.
If you are planning to be a part of Hurricane Harvey recovery, please note that the Rio Texas Conference requires that all participants (youth and adult) receive UMVIM training or at least that one trip leader receives this training.
The UMVIM training aims to ensure that mission teams do not inadvertently “help” in ways that hurt and nurtures attitudes of respect and true partnership with the people and communities who are served.
VIM training session costs $12 per person and are held on a Saturday from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m.
