Job Description

The primary responsibility of the Director of Worship and Music is to help members of St Paul UMC to become fully formed, worshipping disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of their community and world. The secondary responsibility of the Director is to facilitate and lead weekly worship services and supervise musicians of the congregation.

Duties

Direct and lead all Weekly Worship Services of the St Paul congregation. 

  • Creating an order of worship for the two Sunday services based on scriptures and themes provided by pastoral leadership. This includes choosing hymns, anthems, special music, liturgy, etc.
  • Use of Planning Center Online software to record and convey information that is needed for musicians, media screens, printing bulletins, tech preparation, etc.
  • Preparation of communion and altar décor for each service, and purchase of additional supplies and materials as needed for decoration (such as bread, juice, candle oil, paraments, palm fronds, etc.)
  • Assist in creating & facilitating special services such as Ash Wednesday, Christmas Eve, cantatas, etc.
  • Assist and participate in the planning and implementation of funerals and weddings as needed.
  • Assist and participate in Annual Conference worship services as needed.

Direct and lead all Music ministries of the St Paul congregation.

  • Plan, schedule, and lead weekly rehearsals with the Chancel Choir, Chancel Ringers, and musicians.
  • Recruit children, youth, and adults to participate in ensembles and/or provide special music.
  • Select and schedule, anthems, bell pieces, offertories, and other special music to be presented as part of a worship service or church program.
  • Oversee the music library of sheet music, and all licensure necessary for live performance, broadcast and livestream of all copyrighted music.
  • Purchase music, instruments, and supplies as needed for musicians and musical ensembles.
  • Supervise hired musicians, including but not limited to the organist and pianist

Collaborate and participate in church staff functions.

  • Background checks, staff meetings, trainings, team-building, and planning activities.

Qualifications

  • Professional education in music performance and/or 3+ years of worship leadership with a congregation
  • Personal relationship skills that result in effective ministry with volunteers, staff members, and diverse individuals in the congregation and community
  • Passionate and observable commitment to the values, teaching, and mission of Jesus Christ, agreement with the Christian doctrines of the United Methodist Church, and its theological task
  • Personal relationship skills that result in effective ministry with volunteers, staff members, and diverse individuals in the congregation and community
  • Compassion and vision for ministry with seniors, adults, youth, and children
  • Professional quality skills in communication, team building, & technology
  • A clear background check pertaining to interactions with minors, and other relevant areas of ministry with St Paul United Methodist Church.
