Job Description

Christ United Methodist Church Plano (“Christ UMC”) is a 5,000-member church filled with talented, passionate, caring people with a heart for ministry and mission.

The Director is responsible for supporting the mission and vision of Christ United by developing, coordinating, and implementing comprehensive children’s ministries from birth to 5th grade. The Director is expected to demonstrate excellence through providing vision, leadership, oversight, and execution of the Children’s Ministries programs.

The Director is responsible for the strategic and tactical elements of all programs, activities, and educational aspects related to the Children’s Ministries at Christ UMC. The Director is also responsible for the management, training, and oversight of Children’s Ministries volunteers.

The Director’s primary function is the coordination and direction of all Children’s Ministry functions for infants to 5th grade and to aid in the growing, nurturing, and developing of their Christian faith. 

Responsibilities

  • Create and foster lasting relationships with children and their families. 

  • Define and implement a vision and strategy for whole-family discipleship within Children’s Ministry that aligns with and supports the overall vision and ministry of Christ UMC. 

  • Recruit, train, support, and empower volunteers to deliver quality programs and ensure the effective use of resources. 

  • Coordinate the hiring, training, and staffing of childcare/nursery workers alongside other members of the staff. 

  • Develop regular programming for nursery-5th grade. 

  • Organize and implement 3-4 large community outreach events each year (e.g., Easter Egg Hunt, Vacation Bible School, Fall Fest, Santa Experience, etc.). 

  • Prepare materials and coordinate teachers for Sunday School. 

  • Assist pastors with the delivery of children’s messages during Sunday services. 

  • Ensure regular, consistent, and clear communication among Children’s Ministry staff and parents regarding upcoming events, programs, and other important information.  

  • Work with Music Director to coordinate children’s music programs. 

  • Maintain safe and clean classroom environments and storage spaces for staff, volunteers, and children. 

  • Employ and facilitate the completion and maintenance of Ministry Safe training for all volunteers working with children. 

  • Assist the Executive Director in budget development for Children’s Ministries. 

  • Develop processes and systems necessary for effective and efficient Children’s Ministry operations, including volunteer screening, security, and check-in. 

  • Oversee and evaluate Children’s Sunday School processes and programming: 

  • Ensure all classrooms have adequate teachers, adequately trained: 

  • Monitor trends and attendance. 

  • Plan and implement children’s-related worship activities such as children’s time, acolyte ministries, family worship services, baptism assistance, etc.

  • A teachable and humble nature balanced with confidence to execute. 

  • Possess highly developed interpersonal skills (verbal, non-verbal, and written), and be comfortable with providing regular and effective communication with children, students, parents, volunteers, and staff. 

  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to appropriately prioritize a wide variety and frequency of tasks. 

  • Maintain flexible hours to accommodate some evening and overnight activities such as camps and retreats when needed. 

  • Comfortable with public speaking. 

Qualifications

  • Be in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, seeking learning opportunities, spiritual development, and continuing education as needed to enhance your relationship and effectiveness. 

  • Bachelor’s/Master's degree with an emphasis in early childhood education, educational leadership, or Christian ministries is preferred.  Relevant work experience may be an acceptable equivalent to a degree. 

  • Previous work experience in early childhood education, event planning, marketing, project management, and/or campaigns preferred.
