UM ARMY Steps Up After Tornadoes
In May 2024, the city of Temple, Texas, was struck by two devastating tornadoes, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. Amidst the chaos, a coalition of youth from several United Methodist churches stepped in to help with recovery efforts.
Troy United Methodist Church served as the host church for the U.M. ARMY mission trip, which included youth and adults from Troy UMC, Ash Lane UMC and New World UMC and Trinity UMC in Arlington. Around 70 youth and adults worked tirelessly in the heat, helping Temple residents recover from the storms.
In a show of community spirit, the group distributed UMCOR flood buckets sourced from Central UMC in Waco, providing much-needed supplies to those affected. Their work caught the attention of local media, and news stations interviewed several youth while they were on the job. The church later broadcast the interviews, much to the surprise of the volunteers.
In addition to their relief work, the group participated in a photo scavenger hunt around the nearby city of Troy, where they performed acts of kindness and handed out tiny Jesus figurines to community members. These small gestures helped spread hope and positivity during a challenging time.
In September, as part of Preparedness Awareness Month, the city of Temple formally recognized all outside groups that assisted in the tornado cleanup efforts honoring U.M. ARMY, in particular, with a key to the city. Rev. Kaitlynn Shannon, Senior Pastor of Troy UMC, attended the ceremony in to accept the award on behalf of U.M. Army and Troy UMC.
The event not only highlighted the importance of preparedness but also showcased the strength and unity of the United Methodist connection in the aftermath of natural disasters.
