Bishop Saenz on the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election

Companions in Christ,

As we come through a contentious election season, I write to remind us of our higher purpose and identity as followers of Jesus Christ. Regardless of political outcomes, we are first and foremost citizens of God's kingdom, called to be agents of love, justice, and reconciliation.

Our nation faces divisions, but we must remember that our ultimate allegiance is not to any political party or leader but to Christ.

Our loyalty to Christ and love for our neighbors compels us to:

  1. Engage in respectful dialogue, especially with those holding different views, actively listening, seeking to understand rather than simply be heard.
  2. Advocate for justice and the common good, guided by our United Methodist Social Principles, which call us to "support structures in the church and civil society that honor the basic freedoms and rights of all human beings and protect God's creation."
  3. Extend grace and compassion to all, remembering that everyone is created in God's image, has sacred worth, and is worthy of dignity and respect.
  4. Work towards reconciliation and healing in our communities, being "ambassadors for Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:20) who bridge divides and build understanding.
  5. Maintain our hope grounded in the sovereignty of God over all nations, leaders, and rulers.

Our outlook and mission as followers of Jesus and United Methodists transcends political boundaries. We are people of passionate faith, boundless hope, and courageous spirit, working together to create the beloved community that God envisions for all people.

In the love and grace of Christ,

Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr.
