A&M United Methodist Church, College Station, TX
Job Description
A&M United Methodist Church is seeking a gifted, spiritually mature, and collaborative Director of Contemporary Worship to lead and shape contemporary worship for our growing congregation. This full-time position provides leadership for the church's contemporary worship ministry while partnering with pastors, staff, volunteers, and musicians to create Christ-centered worship experiences that help people encounter God, grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, and be sent into the world to love and serve their neighbors.
We believe worship is one of the primary ways disciples are formed. Through music, Scripture, prayer, and the arts, we seek to create worship experiences that are biblically grounded, reflective of our United Methodist/Wesleyan theology, musically excellent, and spiritually transformative. Worship at A&M UMC is intentionally collaborative, bringing together pastors, staff, musicians, and volunteers to create meaningful experiences that invite people of every generation into the presence of God.
This is a unique opportunity to help shape worship in a thriving, multi-generational church where children, youth, college students, young adults, families, and retirees worship side by side each week. Beyond leading worship on Sunday mornings, the Director of Contemporary Worship will help cultivate a culture of worship that forms disciples, develops leaders, and equips people of all ages to discover and use their gifts. From partnering with children's, youth, and college ministries to mentoring the next generation of worship leaders, this role offers the opportunity to influence the worship life of the entire church.
Key Responsibilities:
Worship Leadership
- Lead the church’s Sunday morning contemporary worship service (currently at 9:45 a.m.) and special worship experiences throughout the year, including worship opportunities that extend beyond the church and engage the wider community.
- Provide musical leadership, coaching, and mentorship for Kids of Praise Children’s Choir and Youth Worship on Sunday evenings and College Worship on Thursday evenings, partnering with ministry leaders to develop participants as musicians and worship leaders.
- Collaborate with the pastoral staff to plan worship that complements Scripture, sermon series, the liturgical calendar, and the overall vision of the church.
- Select music that is biblically grounded, reflective of our United Methodist/Wesleyan theology, spiritually engaging, and accessible to people from a variety of Christian backgrounds.
- Lead rehearsals that cultivate both musical excellence and spiritual formation.
- Partner with the Director of Media & Technology to design worship environments that thoughtfully integrate music, media, lighting, and visual elements in support of the worship experience.
- Collaborate with the Director of Media & Technology to ensure worship planning and production work seamlessly together while respecting each ministry's unique leadership responsibilities.
Developing Worship Leaders
- Recruit, mentor, equip, and shepherd instrumentalists, vocalists, and emerging worship leaders.
- Invest intentionally in developing children, youth, college students, and adults as worship leaders, musicians, vocalists, and servant leaders.
- Create clear pathways for volunteers to grow spiritually, musically, and as leaders in worship ministry.
- Foster a worship ministry culture marked by humility, encouragement, excellence, joy, and collaboration.
Ministry Partnership
- Partner closely with the College Pastor to shape meaningful worship experiences for the college ministry while mentoring students to serve as vocalists, instrumentalists, and worship leaders.
- Partner closely with the Director of Youth Ministry to create engaging, age-appropriate youth worship while developing students as vocalists and musicians.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Media & Technology to encourage and support volunteers serving in production ministries—including presentation software, audio, lighting, and video—while respecting the Director's leadership of those ministries.
- Partner with the Director of Children's Ministry to create meaningful opportunities for children to participate in worship and develop their gifts through music and leadership.
- Collaborate with pastors and ministry leaders to ensure worship supports the discipleship and mission of the entire church.
- Work closely with the Communications and Media teams to communicate worship experiences and special events with creativity and excellence.
Leadership & Administration
- Manage the contemporary worship budget, equipment, and other ministry resources with integrity and faithful stewardship.
- Participate fully in the life of A&M United Methodist Church through weekly worship, small groups or Bible studies, congregational events, staff collaboration, and the broader ministry of the church.
- Support and advance the mission, vision, and values of A&M United Methodist Church.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who sees worship as an integral part of forming disciples of Jesus Christ. The ideal candidate loves people as much as music, values teamwork over individual recognition, and finds joy in helping others discover and use their God-given gifts. They understand that success is measured not simply by excellent worship services, but by lives transformed through worship and people equipped for ministry.
Qualified candidates will demonstrate:
- A vibrant and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a clear calling to worship ministry.
- A commitment to a life of personal discipleship, active participation in the life of the church, and spiritual leadership both on and off the platform.
- Experience leading contemporary worship in a church setting.
- Strong vocal and instrumental leadership abilities.
- A passion for mentoring volunteers and developing future worship leaders across generations.
- The ability to lead worship and teams with humility, authenticity, creativity, and excellence.
- Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
- A collaborative leadership style with the ability to work effectively across multiple ministry areas.
- Experience with Planning Center and other worship planning software; familiarity with worship technology and production environments is preferred.
- A bachelor's degree in music, worship ministry, theology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- A commitment to the mission, vision, and ministry of A&M United Methodist Church.
