Director of Music

Following is the job description for the position of Director of Music as established by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee on 4/26/2026.

The Director of Music plays a vital role in leading the choir, developing music programs, and supporting the church’s mission through music. Key duties:

  • Supervising and directing the entire music program. This includes leading and developing the church choir, selecting music for the choir that aligns with the church’s mission and ideas to enhance worship services, securing accompanists, arranging for a substitute to lead the choir when the Director is on vacation, and working with the Pastor and others in planning for worship and special events
  • Confer with the Minister (preferably during weekly staff meetings) and use hymns that complement the sermon’s theme each week Conducting weekly choir rehearsals, typically scheduled on Wednesdays, and leading the choir during worship services and on special occasions
  • Directing seasonal music programs such as for Christmas and Easter
  • Recruiting and developing new choir members
  • Managing the choir’s budget, scheduling performances, and communicating with the church office regarding music selections for service
  • Organizing/coordinating with other ensembles such as Youth Choir, Bell Choir, etc.

Education: A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred, along with at least three years of experience leading adult choirs. The ideal candidate should be a committed Christian, possess good organizational skills, and have a positive attitude while working collaboratively with others.

Hours: Minimum 11 hours per week.

Salary: Starting salary $15K gross annual salary.

Vacation: Standard beginning vacation of 2 weeks per year.

Start Date: XX/XX/2026 for in-office work, planning, meeting people, etc.; XX/XX/2026 begin directing on Sunday mornings.

Note: The Director of Music falls under the standard Wesley UMC policy of beginning employment with a 3-month probationary period. Performance will be reviewed at the end of the probationary period and then annually at the designated time.
