Job Title: Children's Director

Position Overview: The Children's Director is responsible for developing, leading, and implementing the children's ministry program, fostering a nurturing and safe environment that helps children grow in their faith and love for God. This includes overseeing Sunday school programs, vacation Bible school (VBS), special events, and discipleship initiatives for children from birth through [age limit, e.g., 5th grade]. The Children's Director works closely with church staff, volunteers, and families to support the spiritual and emotional development of children in the congregation.
Key Responsibilities:
•Develop and Lead Children’s Ministry: Plan, coordinate, and oversee Sunday school lessons, children’s worship, and any children’s events. Implement curriculum based on United Methodist doctrine, scripture, and church teachings. Ensure programs are engaging, age-appropriate, and help children build a relationship with Christ.
• Recruit and Train Volunteers: Recruit, train, and provide ongoing support for volunteers and teachers in children’s ministry programs. Ensure all volunteers complete necessary background checks and are in compliance with child safety protocols. Market Street UMC utilizes Ministry Safe for abuse awareness trainings and background checks.
• Create a Safe and Inclusive Environment: Ensure that all activities and programs are safe, nurturing, and welcoming to all children, including those with special needs. Promote and enforce the church’s child protection policies.
• Develop and Support Parent Relationships: Foster relationships with parents, encouraging their involvement in children’s ministry activities. Provide resources and support for parents in their child’s spiritual formation at home.
•Coordinate Special Programs and Events: Oversee planning for VBS, holiday programs (e.g., Advent, Christmas, Easter), retreats, and other special events. Organize family-oriented events and community outreach opportunities for children and their families.
• Budget Management: Develop and manage the children’s ministry budget, ensuring effective use of resources. Assist in fundraising efforts or securing donations for special events and needs.
• Collaborate with Other Ministry Areas: Work closely with other staff members (e.g., youth ministry, worship ministry) to create opportunities for children to be involved in the broader church life. Attend staff meetings, offering insight into children's needs and how they intersect with overall church goals.
• Ensure Spiritual Development: Focus on the spiritual development of children through prayer, Bible teaching, and fostering a Christ-centered environment. Encourage children to participate in service opportunities and community outreach. Qualifications:
• Education: A degree in Christian education, theology, or a related field is preferred. Experience in children's ministry, teaching, or education is highly valued.
• Experience: Previous experience working with children in a church setting, particularly within the United Methodist Church, is preferred. Strong leadership and organizational skills are required, with a proven ability to work with volunteers.
• Personal Attributes: A deep commitment to Christ and the United Methodist Church teachings. Passion for working with children and helping them grow spiritually. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both with children and adults. Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively with church leadership.
• Certification/Background Checks: Must complete background checks as required by church policy. First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain) is a plus.
Working Conditions:
• Must be available for weekend and evening work for ministry programs, special events, and church services.
• May need to attend training or conferences related to children's ministry.
