Preschool Director
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Preschool Director runs the daily activities of Spring Valley UMC Preschool by inspiring and overseeing the Preschool staff, by creating an environment in which the mission of Spring Valley UMC Preschool is accomplished and embodied, by promoting the Preschool to prospective families, and by working with SVUMC to promote the mission of the United Methodist Church through the outreach of the school. This is a full-time position during the regular 9-month school year and part-time during the summer. The Director must be able to manage personalities and instill a sense of common purpose, confidence, and teamwork in the staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the Preschool teaching staff, resulting in a staff that understands and teaches effectively and creates an environment that reflects the love of God and is consistent with best early childhood educational practices by:
- Cultivating loving, serving, thinking preschoolers
- Recruiting teachers that can fulfill this mission
- Observing and evaluating teachers and training teachers toward this mission
- Overseeing teachers’ continuing education training as required by state licensing and providing training to staff as needed
- Discovering the best practices in the broader preschool community and implementing these practices
- Being an exemplar concerning professional personal standards
- Maintaining the spirit and spiritual life of the Preschool
- Establishing and reaching performance standards for teaching staff and students
- Serving as a member of the SVUMC Preschool Board
- Propagate the vision of the Preschool to the teaching staff, parents, prospective staff, and broader community by communicating this vision consistently and effectively to the school community through:
- Overseeing and creating regular communication with parents
- Meeting with prospective parents and sharing the Preschool’s vision with them
- Participating in Preschool tours
- Maintaining excellent rapport with parents, church staff and membership
- Set and promote high standards and expectations for students’ learning and behavior by:
- Overseeing student admissions process
- Maintaining excellent rapport with parents, church staff and membership
- Evaluating lesson plans and long-term academic planning
- Working with teachers and families to determine student needs
- Making sure policies are in place to meet those needs
- Meeting with or communicating with parents when academic or disciplinary needs arise
- Participate in the life and ministry of SVUMC by:
- Attending all church staff meetings
- Participating in the goals and objectives of the United Methodist Church
- Promoting the work of the Preschool as a mission of the church
- Promoting the work of the church to Preschool families and seeking to involve families with the church whenever possible
- Working with the Preschool Board to facilitate the operations of the Preschool
- Attending Preschool Board meetings and other meetings requested by the church
- Maintaining confidentiality and promoting unity of the church
- Administer the Preschool’s daily operation in compliance with all minimum requirements of DFPS Minimum Standards by:
- Reviewing and supervising the staff personnel files and ensuring they are compliant with all licensing requirements, including all necessary background checks and educational requirements
- Reviewing and supervising all student files to ensure they are compliant with all licensing requirements
- Reviewing and supervising all state required inspections and keeping operational records in compliance with all licensing requirements
- Oversee the Preschool’s finances and ensure the financial soundness of the Preschool by:
- Creating the annual Preschool budget in connection with the Preschool Board
- Setting staff salaries and submitting bimonthly payroll to the church
- Overseeing the monthly billing and tuition collection
- Reviewing all expenditures
- Overseeing the purchase of Preschool materials and equipment resulting in teachers having the materials and equipment they need
- Viewing expected growth and estimating accordingly
- Working with the Preschool Board and Finance Committee to ensure the financial wellbeing of the Preschool
- Oversee the Preschool office, resulting in a well-run, pleasant, and efficient daily operation by:
- Managing the Preschool office, making sure that Preschool resources, both human and financial, are used effectively and that personnel have clear responsibilities and structure
- Tracking staff attendance and finding substitutes when needed
- Maintaining the Preschool calendar in connection with SVUMC and coordinating activities
- Communicating the activities of the Preschool to the church, teaching staff, and families
- Inform the Preschool Board and Senior Pastor of concerns, problems, successes, and general operations by:
- Interacting regularly with and listening to the staff, parents, and students
- Seeking advice when necessary
- Providing both regular and requested reports to the Preschool Board and Senior Pastor
- Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree—preferable in early childhood education
- Minimum of 12 hours in child development and 6 hours in business management
- Education and experience requirements must meet current regulation of DFPS At least 2 years’ experience in a licensed childcare center or educational setting Directors Certificate—or ability to obtain one from TX DFPS
- Knowledge of DFPS Minimum Standards
- Christian who understands the dynamics of a faith based early childhood education system
