Director of Children’s Ministries Job Description (draft)
Time Commitment: part-time, 6-10 hours per week
Position Summary
The children’s director leads and develops the church’s ministry for infants through elementary-aged children, creating a safe, trusting, and engaging Christ-centered environment where kids learn and grow in their faith and spirituality. This role focuses on ministry & programming, volunteer leadership, and partnering with parents and families.
Key Responsibilities
- Weekly children’s ministry and programming (primary focus)
- Plan and oversee Sunday children’s ministry (nursery through elementary)
- Access or create age-appropriate lessons and activities that align with Wesleyan theology and values
- Ensure classrooms are prepared, staffed, and running smoothly
- Volunteer recruitment & leadership
- Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers
- Provide clear expectations, curriculum, and support
- Build a positive, trusting and reliable volunteer culture
- Safety and security
- Ensure that volunteers are trained and certified in Ministry Safe safety protocols, and that the training and certifications are renewed every other year
- Ensure classrooms meet safety standards
- Train volunteers on procedures
- Parent/family communication
- Communicate regularly with parents about curriculum, events, and expectations
- Be available to address questions or concerns
- Equip and partner with parents in their child’s spiritual development at home
- Events and special programming
- Plan and lead children’s events (VBS, holiday programs, family events)
- Coordinate logistics, volunteers, and communications
- Administration
- Maintain curriculum and inventory
- Coordinate children’s ministry budget with pastor and church leadership
- Maintain Ministry Safe safety protocols
- Manage attendance, classroom organization, and supplies
Qualifications
- Strong personal faith and alignment with Wesleyan theology and values
- Passion for working with children and their families
- Organizational, leadership, and relational skills
- Ability to recruit and lead volunteers
- Must be Ministry Safe trained and certified
- Prior children’s ministry and/or education preferred
Suggested Work Breakdown
- 3-4 hours: Sunday preparation & activities
- 2 hours: volunteer coordination and communication (varies by season)
- 2 hours: curriculum planning (varies by season)
- 2 hours: admin + event planning (varies by season)
(schedule includes evenings and Sundays)
Reporting structure
- Reports directly to pastor, supported by SPRC
