Job Description
Position: Part-time ($18,000-$20,000 annually, based on experience)
Schedule: Up to 20 hours/week
Reports to: Senior Pastor
Summary:
Our Youth Director is responsible for leading the Youth Ministry Team to pursue the First UMC mission of “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”. Through spiritual leadership, the Team’s goal is to help youth connect deeply with God and other Christians, grow intentionally, serve joyfully, and lead courageously. Our Youth Ministry is presently leading 8-10 7th -12th grade students per month, but has potential for growth in this vibrant church of 150 in a growing college and agricultural community. Emphasis is placed on developing positive relationships with youth and their families in order to recognize their special gifts and talents. Our Youth Director will nurture and equip adult volunteers/interns to minister to youth and their families through various small groups, programs, events, and fundraisers, and will work to build and sustain an environment that attracts and disciples youth.

- Passion to facilitate the spiritual growth of youth.
- Flexible, dedicated, dependable, energetic and personally motivated
- Capable of effective, relevant communication with youth, families, volunteers and staff
- Solid Biblical knowledge consistent with United Methodist theology and practice
- Able to oversee, choose, prepare, and provide balanced age-appropriate materials and messages.
- Previous education/instructional experience encouraged.
- Able to provide initial counseling with youth and their parents struggling with life issues. This includes understanding when the need exceeds their counseling capability and referring the family to qualified professionals.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or working toward a degree preferred.
- Degree and/or prior experience in Youth Education/Youth Ministry preferred
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Invite, encourage & equip an adult volunteer team to effectively minister to youth.
- Form a Youth Ministry Team in conjunction with Oakdale UMC to implement youth ministry vision and planning. This formation would have the assistance of the pastors of both churches.
- Coordinate with the Youth Ministry Team and Church Staff to provide strategic planning and visioning: setting goals & direction, evaluating existing ministries and creating new ones.
- Coordinate with the Youth Ministry Team and Church Staff in the use of program materials, equipment, supplies, and space utilization.
- Attend Staff meetings to integrate Youth Ministry into the whole of First UMC’s ministry.
- Prepare and lead both Sunday School classes and a weekly event that exposes youth in all stages of the faith to the joys of life in Christ.
- Plan a variety of opportunities for youth to experience fellowship, evangelism, discipleship, worship and mission.
- Communicate regularly with youth, families, and congregation.
- Work in conjunction with West District and area churches activities.
- Maintain current Ministry Safe requirements.
- Attend weekly Sunday worship.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
