Job Description


The Organist & Rehearsal Accompanist at Christ United Methodist Church provides organ and 
piano music for worship, rehearsals, concerts, weddings, funerals, and other special services or 
events as needed. Christ United has a membership of 5,000, with an instrumental inventory that 
includes a 4- manual, 90-rank Reuter Pipe Organ and a Steinway Hamburg Concert Grand Piano, 
both used for traditional worship services on Sundays at 8:45 AM, 9:45 AM, and 11:00 AM in its 
1,800-seat sanctuary.


The Organist & Rehearsal Accompanist reports to the Director of Music & Worship Ministries. (S)he 
assists the director in worship by preparing and providing music of the highest caliber for the 
spiritual enrichment and edification of both the choir and the congregation.


Duties and Responsibilities:
• Planning, preparing, and rehearsing organ and piano music for worship, choir 
rehearsals, weddings, funerals, concerts, communion, and other special services
• Facilitating congregational singing and participation by providing music for worship in a 
professional manner and utilizing the full range of the organ’s capabilities
• Accompanying regular rehearsals of the Sanctuary Choir on Wednesday nights and 
Sunday mornings, and assisting with sectional rehearsals as requested
• Accompanying monthly rehearsals of the Women’s Chorus and Men’s Chorus on a 
Sunday afternoon. (i.e. 2 rehearsals for WC in January, 2 rehearsals for MC in February, 
etc.)
• Serving as substitute accompanist for the youth choir as needed
• Scheduling ad hoc rehearsals with soloists or other collaborators as needed to prepare 
for worship
• Working with the Director of Music & Worship Ministries to arrange in advance for a 
qualified substitute organist or pianist when absent from church services or rehearsals
• Overseeing and scheduling maintenance of the organ and four pianos
• Directing the handbell choir
o Directing a weekly rehearsal on Wednesday evening.
o Selecting music for the ensemble to play in worship and special worship 
services
o Overseeing the maintenance of bells and bell equipment
o Working with the Director of Music to schedule the ensemble’s participation in 
worship
• Fulfilling other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in music (preferably with organ/piano emphasis) required
• Experience in recruiting and working with professional and volunteer instrumentalists
• Skillful playing of piano and organ including accompanying choral rehearsals, 
congregational singing, and other types of musical collaboration
• Broad knowledge of sacred worship music from classical to contemporary
• Ability to select music that enhances worship and incorporates a variety of musical 
genres
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills along with a professional, 
friendly demeanor
• Working knowledge of the organ and its full range of capabilities to enhance worship 
Work Schedule:
This is a part-time salaried position with an expected work schedule of approximately 25 hours per 
week, including Sunday morning worship services, Wednesday night rehearsals, practice time, and 
other special events or services as needed.
