Job Description

Reports To: Senior Pastor

Job Summary:  The Director of Discipleship is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs and initiatives that promote spiritual growth, education, and community engagement within the church. This role involves creating and facilitating opportunities for members to deepen their faith, engage in meaningful relationships, and actively participate in the church’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Program Development:

  • Design and implement discipleship programs that align with the church’s mission and vision.
  • Help select curriculum and materials for Bible studies, small groups, and other educational activities.
  • Plan and coordinate workshops, seminars, and retreats focused on spiritual growth and leadership development.
  • Evaluate and adjust programs based on feedback and effectiveness to meet the needs of the congregation.

2. Leadership and Training:

  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer leaders and group facilitators.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to leaders and members involved in discipleship programs.
  • Encourage and model spiritual growth and leadership principles through various communication channels.

3. Community Building:

  • Create opportunities for members to connect, share experiences, and support one another in their faith journeys through group activities and events.
  • Facilitate intergenerational and cross-cultural interactions to build a diverse and inclusive community.

4. Administration and Coordination:

  • Manage the budget and resources allocated for discipleship programs.
  • Maintain records and track progress related to discipleship initiatives and participant engagement.
  • Manage event logistics, including scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating with vendors or external partners.
  • Collaborate with other church staff and leaders to ensure alignment with overall church goals and strategies.
  • Develop and distribute promotional materials for programs and events through various channels (e.g., church website, social media, newsletters).
  • Maintain effective communication with church members and staff about upcoming programs and activities.

5. Outreach and Evangelism:

  • Develop and implement activities to reach out to new and existing members.
  • Equip members to actively participate in outreach and service projects.
  • Foster partnerships with community organizations and other churches as needed.

6. Other Duties as Assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.  Religious studies preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and congregation members.
  • Passion for fostering spiritual growth and building community.
  • Proven experience in church ministry, leadership, or discipleship roles in the United Methodist Church is preferred.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with program development and curriculum design.
  • Knowledge of current trends in church ministry and discipleship.
  • Proficiency in using technology for communication and program management.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position with flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Typical work week is Sunday through Thursday.  Occasional Friday and Saturday for special events.
  • Requires active participation in church events and activities.
  • May involve occasional travel.
