Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Operations Director serves as a key member of the church’s leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial, facility, and human resources operations of First United Methodist Church Denton (FUMC Denton). This role ensures that the church’s operational systems effectively support its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management

  • Provide strategic oversight of the church’s finances, ensuring fiscal responsibility, transparency, and alignment with ministry goals.
  • Supervise the bookkeeper in the day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
  • Collaborate with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to develop and manage the annual operating budget.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports for the Finance Committee, Trustees, Administrative Council, staff, and designated funds.
  • Ensure compliance with United Methodist financial policies, nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable laws.
  • Manage insurance, risk management, and auditing processes.

Human Resources

  • Provide leadership in HR administration, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits coordination, annual benefits renewal, and compliance with employment laws.
  • Support the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) in policy development and personnel management.
  • Maintain employee records, job descriptions, and the staff handbook.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and mission-driven staff culture.

Facilities Management

  • Supervise the maintenance and custodial team, ensuring facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming.
  • Manage vendor relationships and service contracts.
  • In collaboration with Trustees and Building Maintenance Team:
    • Develop and manage long-term facility maintenance and capital improvement plans.
    • Ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, and code/building regulations.

Administrative Leadership

  • Participate in senior staff meetings and strategic planning processes, offering operational insight and support.
  • Ensure efficient and ethical management of church resources.
  • Coordinate with ministry staff and lay committees to support the church’s overall mission.
  • Build, operate, and critically improve necessary systems for church administration

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial and operational leadership, including monthly Financial Reporting, ideally within a nonprofit or faith-based organization.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people (including volunteers) and complex systems.
  • Proficiency with financial software (FUMC Denton currently uses Realm) and Microsoft Office Suite (incl. Sharepoint).
  • Experience with HR policies, payroll administration, and employment law.
  • Alignment with the mission and values of the United Methodist Church.
