Choir Director Job Description

  • Church: First United Methodist Church The Colony 
  • Hours: 20 hours per week 
  • FLSA Status: non-exempt

Description:  The member of the leadership team who plans, develops, coordinates, implements and directs all aspects of the Church’s Music program.

Reporting Relationship:  Reports to Senior Pastor

Supervisory Responsibility:  This position includes supervision of FUMCTC’s Pianist 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Guides the work of all music programs (below) through the year in consultation with the Pastor:
  • Adult Choir: 
    • Schedules and plans all music performances in consultation with the Senior Pastor and Worship committee (including worship services and all special programs)
    • Selects music, organizes and directs all rehearsals and performances
    • Creates music program for special services
    • Serves as vocal leader in worship unless delegated to a volunteer 
    • Secures guest musicians and fill-in musicians as needed
    • Prepares all lyrics/slides on PowerPoint/ProPresenter for service
    • Ensures choir members keep their robes clean, presentable and ready for use
  • Children’s Choir(s)
    • Coordinates musical opportunities for children on an as needed basis for service
    • Oversees volunteer(s) who direct rehearsals and performances 
  • Instrument Choir(s) (Adult Hand Bell, Flute Choir, etc.): 
    • Schedules and plans all music performances in consultation with the Senior Pastor and Worship committee 
    • Selects music, organizes and directs all rehearsals and performances
    • Creates music program for all special services
  • Other:
    • Secures guest musicians and fill-in musicians as needed
    • Responsible for any special musical needs (instruments, hand bell music stands, etc.)
    • Secures instrumental accompanists as needed for funerals or special services 
    • Organize and Implements 1-2 Concert Series Events a year
    • Creates proposed budget and manages all spending and fundraising income
    • Ensures music licenses are properly obtained, included in slides, and are within budget
    • Implements and follows a maintenance/service schedule for all musical instruments
    • Oversees the music library
    • Oversee the church pianist position  – providing guidance and preparing music copies for Sunday
    • Organizes and oversees all volunteers for the music ministry 
    • Attends staff meetings and Leadership Board meetings as required
    • Works cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers, and is an effective team member
    • This position requires being available and physically present at the church facility on certain days (Sundays, during Choir Practice, during Leadership Board meetings, Easter, Christmas and other holidays as defined by the Pastor)
    • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:  

  • Master’s Degree or higher in some area of music preferred
  • Capable of leading worship vocally
  • Functional keyboard skills – able to play for sectionals or rehearsal if need be
  • Working knowledge of choral rehearsal techniques and conducting
  • Basic knowledge of copyright laws as they relate to choral church music
  • Strong organizational skills, strong attention to detail, strong communication skills, ability to maintain confidentiality

Work Environment:  This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and electronic equipment. 

Physical Demands:  This is largely a sedentary role; however, some walking, filing and lifting is occasionally required, along with moving light music equipment and chairs. 

Travel: No travel required, but opportunities for travel experiences.
