Job Description

Northaven UMC is a progressive, inclusive congregation of about 450 members in North Dallas. We are seeking a candidate to fill a new position that will serve the needs of those inside and outside our congregation. Position is 25-30 hours/week, with a salary of $50,000 to $53,000.

Primary duties:

  • Direct the strategy and execution of all internal and external communications, including, website, social media, public relations and media, and special events
  • Promote the ministries of Northaven to the Horizon Texas Conference and across the UMC community using their communications platforms
  • Create and deepen connections with local community partners, with an emphasis on social justice and historically marginalized communities
  • Build coalitions with community partners that share our values of peace, justice, compassion and reconciliation, and create opportunities for service
  • Coordinate with church leadership to support current initiatives and serve as a clearinghouse for new initiatives

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and deepen connections with local community partners with an emphasis on social justice and a heart for historically marginalized communities
  • Connect the church with the needs of our broader community, and explore new ways for the church to serve members of our community
  • Serve as a “project manager” to help church members move toward action and community engagement as an essential aspect of spiritual growth and loving our neighbors well
  • Coordinate with leaders of Connect, Serve, Grow, and Membership, providing support for their initiatives and serving as a clearinghouse for new initiatives
  • Direct the strategy and execution of all internal and external communication, including Northaven’s brand and online presence, email communications, public relations and outreach, and special events
  • Serve as the primary overseer of Northaven’s brand to ensure all communications and media accurately and consistently reflect Northaven’s theological perspective and approach to ministry
  • Demonstrate proven excellence in writing, editing, and proofing communication artifacts produced for Northaven
  • Maintain a repository of all brand materials and related communication assets, accounts for all software and web-based communication services, etc.
  • Expand and continually improve Northaven’s online presence (website, social media, email marketing, etc.) by creating a strategy and delivering related content, including graphics, video, print collateral, and digital campaigns
  • Track various data analytics for social and online channel(s), explore ways to connect online visitors to our various programs, and report monthly to the Senior Pastor
  • Collaborate with Northaven’s senior pastor, staff, and key leadership regarding all communication demands, following and adapting the production schedule, including to catalog Sunday worship services
  • As requested, assist with special events and their related marketing and communication needs
  • Attend and assist as requested, with Sunday worship services
  • Seek ways to promote the ministries of Northaven to the Horizon Texas Conference and across the United Methodist community using their communication platform

Background and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field of study
  • Proven experience with email marketing, content creation, asset management, and standardization of tools and techniques that support communication tools and processes
  • Strong skills with software tools to create, edit, and publish written and visual media through email and social media, the church website, and any other media destination that meets the church's communication needs.
  • Experience and ability to use tools such as:  Adobe Creative Suite, Google/G Suite, SquareSpace, Constant Contact, Vimeo, and YouTube.
  • 2-4 years of experience in communications, digital marketing, and social media
  • Excellent writing, editing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Basic graphic design skills (preferred), or demonstration of graphic design literacy
  • Ability to appropriately adjust presentation style depending on internal or external audiences
  • Experience in collaborating with volunteers
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Strong creative, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Career history with a church or nonprofit a plus
  • Commitment to a progressive and inclusive community of faith

Other Requirements

  • Attend weekly staff meetings (1 hour)
  • Attend worship services
