Minister with Children and Families
Staff Classification
- 30 hours/week Ministry Program Staff
Position Overview
The Minister with Children oversees First United Methodist Church Plano’s ministry with children (birth through fifth grade) and their families.
Major Responsibilities
Children’s Missions and Ministries
- Develop and maintain children’s missions and ministries
- Lead strategic planning of the church’s ministry with children and their families
- Develop coordinated and holistic ministries and missions for children
- Calendar events and reserve rooms for the same.
- Weekly Children’s newsletter to families via Constant Contact
- Attend Worship and Staff meetings
- Procedure for contacting families when children miss events
- Develop and manage the Children’s Ministry budget
- Children’s Sunday School
- Recruit, train and develop Sunday school teachers and staff
- Select appropriate curriculum
- Provide event logistics, materials and equipment support
- Keep good records of attendance in all ministries for internal and external reports
- Summer Camps
- Recruit, train and equip leaders for Vacation Bible Camp
- Provide logistics, materials and equipment support
- Encourage participation in Conference Children’s Camp
- Weekly Sunday night programming – Club 45 and Kids Jam
- One Lent-Easter activity (e.g. Easter Egg Hunt)
- One Advent-Christmas activity (e.g. Advent workshop)
- One special community event (e.g. Trunk or Treat)
- Develop strong lay teams for implementing children’s ministry including:
- Special events
- Teaching events for parents
- Sunday School
- Sunday night programming
- Maintain a strong working relationship with Weekday Program Director and staff
- Maintain a strong working relationship with the Children’s Choir Coordinator
- Support for children and their families during difficult times in conjunction with the pastoral staff
- Resource parents to help their children grow deeper in faith
- Ensure Ministry Safe certificates and background checks are in compliance for all volunteers.

Skills and Qualifications
- A devout Christian person who has the desire and commitment to inspire children and their families to joyfully worship God and follow Jesus.
- Practices spiritual disciplines and an ability to laugh at oneself.
- Exhibits a high level of energy, enthusiasm and passion for working with children.
- Appropriate education and/or certification.
- Track record of organizational excellence in working with children and their families.
- Track record of developing and working well with teams.
- Understands the cognitive, emotional and developmental stages of children’s spirituality.
- Exemplary communication skills with children, parents, community, congregation and staff.
- Commitment to growing the Children’s Ministry in numbers and depth with a desire to take the ministry to the next level of excellence.
- Possesses and utilizes appropriate technology skills.
- Possesses planning and implementation skills.
- Commitment to long-term ministry
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and ministry of FUMC Plano.
Accountability
- The Lead Pastor supervises the Minister with Children.
The Minister with Children is responsible for direct supervision of the Preschool Coordinator.
