Role Summary

The Director of Urban Camp is responsible for the visioning, planning, and management of Urban Camp at FUMC Dallas, a day camp program for children ages Kindergarten-5th grade, including leading and mentoring a staff of young adults in offering creative educational and recreational curriculum for campers.

As a part of the FUMC Dallas church staff reporting to the Director of the DLC, the Director of Urban Camp will be connected to a vibrant multigenerational and inclusive congregation and pre-school in the heart of the Dallas Arts District which seeks to magnify God’s love for all people by creating space for belonging, purpose, justice, and joy.

Primary Responsibilities

Vision and Leadership

  • Work with the Director of the DLC to create meaningful spaces for elementary aged children to find belonging and joy throughout the summer and other times during the year when school is out of session.
  • Supervise and coordinate all Urban Camp programs throughout the year.
  • Maintain an inclusive Christian atmosphere in line with the values of FUMC Dallas.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor the UC staff.
  • Share the stories and vision of Urban Camp with the congregation and community using communication and marketing strategies.

Care and Connection

  • Communicate regularly with campers and their families during camp sessions and throughout the year to promote deeper relationships and connection between the families and the church.
  • Maintain all safety and medical policies and procedures in line with our church’s Ministry Safe expectations.
  • Oversee camper behavior, address disciplinary issues, help mediate any conflicts, and implement strategies for positive behavior management.

Administration and Collaboration

  • With support from the Director of the DLC, be responsible for all themes, curriculum, and supplies for all camps.
  • Oversee and maintain the camp registration process, including the collection of all necessary documentation and records.
  • Manage Urban Camp budget.
  • Manage the Urban Camp Assistant Director(s) and staff as needed.
  • Work alongside FUMC staff: attending regular staff meetings and all-staff functions, attend Church Council quarterly and other duties as assigned.

Certifications or Education Requirements

  • Must be at least 5 years removed from high school graduation
  • Camp counselor experience required
  • Camp director experience preferred
  • Undergraduate degree in child development, education, or related field preferred
  • Must pass a criminal background check
