Director of Youth Ministries Job Description (draft)
Time Commitment: part-time, 15-20 hours per week
Position Summary
The youth director leads and develops the church’s middle and high school ministry, creating a trusting, Christ-centered environment where students can grow in faith, build relationships, and feel connected to the congregation. This role focuses on weekly ministry, volunteer leadership, and relational ministry within a 15-20-hour week.
Key Responsibilities
- Weekly youth ministry and programming (primary focus)
- Plan and lead weekly youth gatherings (teaching, small groups, activities)
- Coordinate Sunday morning and/or evening youth involvement
- Access or create relevant curriculum that is aligned with Wesleyan theology and values
- Student engagement
- Build relationships with students through consistent presence
- Follow up with new students and visitors
- Maintain appropriate communication (text, email, social media)
- Volunteer leadership
- Recruit, train, and support adult volunteers
- Create a healthy, trusting, and team-oriented culture
- Parent communication
- Inform parents about events, teaching topics, and schedules
- Be available to address questions or concerns
- Partner with parents in students’ spiritual development
- Event and outreach coordination
- Plan periodic events (retreats, camps, service projects, hangouts)
- Encourage outreach and invitational culture among students
- Administration
- Manage youth calendar and attendance tracking
- Stay within budget and coordinate with pastor and church leadership
- Ensure that volunteers are trained and certified in Ministry Safe safety protocols, and that the training and certification are renewed every other year
Qualifications
- Strong personal faith and alignment with Wesleyan theology and values
- Passion for students and youth ministry
- Good communication and relational skills
- Ability to teach and lead in a group setting
- Must be Ministry Safe trained and certified
- Prior youth ministry or leadership experience preferred
Suggested Work Breakdown
- 6-8 hours: weekly prep + youth night
- 3-4 hours: Sunday involvement
- 4-5 hours: student/leader connections and communication
- 2-3 hours: admin + planning
(schedule includes evenings and Sundays)
Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to pastor, supported by SPRC
