Herman L. Totten
Herman L. Totten, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC), Denton, Texas was elected president of the Association of Lay Conference Directors of Lay Servant Ministries (ACDLSM). The election took place at the ACDLSM Annual Convocation held at Epworth by the Sea, St. Simons Island, Ga., Feb. 14–17, 2018. Totten represented the North Texas Conference (NTC) at the Annual Convocation.
Dr. Totten is Regents Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus of the College of Information at the University of North Texas, Denton, where he was a professor and dean from 1977 until his retirement in 2015. Totten was a founding member of Trinity UMC in 1980. He is the church’s historian, teaches an adult Sunday School class and is the Lay Representative to the North Texas Conference. He is an active leader in the North Texas Conference, serving as Conference Director of Lay Servant Ministries, Lay Member of the Board of Ordained Ministries, member of the Standing Rules Committee and member of the Board of Laity. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees of Wiley College, a United Methodist church-related institution and his alma mater.
The Association of Conference Directors of Lay Servant Ministries was established to promote Lay Servant Ministries in the United Methodist Church and to work with the General Board of Discipleship to develop new courses for leadership development and spiritual enrichment for Lay Servants. The purpose of the association, a nonprofit organization, is to promote and support the Lay Servant Ministries Program of The United Methodist Church. Its mission is to equip the laity to fulfill their evangelistic, nurturing and witnessing responsibilities that affirm the work of Jesus Christ. The association is to act as an advocate and adviser for Lay Servant Ministries to the General Board of Discipleship and assist in promoting their programs. The association will enable and promote a mutual ministry of and by the laity and the clergy, so that their individual strengths may be best utilized to further the work of Jesus Christ.
