Job Description

The Director of Family Ministry will create and implement a family ministry program that offers a relevant, safe, fun environment for children, youth and families to grow in their faith in Jesus Christ. The Director of Family Ministry will recruit, equip and guide a ministry team of volunteers in providing high-quality discipleship, outreach, spiritual formation, leadership development, worship and mission opportunities for children, youth and their families. The Director of Family Ministry will work with church leadership and staff to ensure that the family ministry program reflects our mission and values.



  • Develop an annual strategic plan for the children and youth programs that align with and support the mission of the church.

  • Recruit and equip adult volunteers, in conjunction with the Youth Council and Children’s Council chairs, to help lead children, youth, and family ministry programs and events of the church.

  • Supervise Sunday Morning Children’s Coordinator and ensure the effective operation of the church nursery.

  • In collaboration with the lead pastor, provide pastoral support and care for children, youth, and their families.

  • Actively participate in church staff meetings, planning, development, and churchwide events and incorporate children and youth within the life of the church.

  • Represent Family Ministry as a part of the church staff and in other areas of the church and community.

  • Serve as the youth pastor and identify, foster, and develop leadership within the youth group.


  • Create and implement programs for children and youth. This will include, but not be limited to, introducing, instructing, and nurturing active participation in order to grow Christian faith and life through Bible study, prayer, fellowship, worship, community service, and outreach.

  • Develop new programs and seek to find ways to grow the children and youth programs, the connections between participants, and their faith development.

  • Plan, schedule, and implement youth activities, including, but not limited to: Youth Connect (UMYF) gatherings, Sunday school, confirmation, retreats, conference events, summer camp, mission projects, summer mission trip, age-appropriate Bible studies, and fellowship activities.

  • Plan, schedule, and implement children’s activities, including, but not limited to: Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, special activities, conference events, summer camp, mission projects, and fellowship activities.

  • Support and equip parents with resources and education to help them become actively and intentionally involved in the spiritual formation and discipleship of their child’s life.

  • Actively engage families through church-supported activities and programs in the community.

  • Promote service and outreach through age-appropriate service projects, including interaction with our community outreach partner Rockbrook Elementary.


  • Manage communication to promote engagement with children, youth, families, and the congregation using the various communication tools available.

  • Organize the infrastructure of the ministry, ordering resources, guiding processes, implementing systems, and managing Ministry Safe policies.

  • Communicate regularly with key ministry stakeholders, both inside the church and those who are part of the community.

  • Develop and oversee the children and youth budgets and maintain financial accountability for Family Ministry.

  • Coordinate schedules and volunteers.

  • Effectively promote growth in size and scope of children and youth ministry with attention to faith formation for all students.

  • Manage the children and youth spaces of the church, ensuring they are safe, clean, and presentable for shared use.


  • Bachelor’s degree with preferred experience in child and/or youth ministry.

  • Passion for and work experience in Christian ministry with and for children, youth, and their families.

  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith as expressed in the United Methodist tradition.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills.

  • Good organizational and administrative skills.

  • Ability to work with varied personalities and perspectives in a collaborative team environment.

  • Competence and comfort with technology, including effectively utilizing platforms of digital communications, social media, video recording, and church-specific software.

  • Pastoral leadership and a heart for diversity and inclusion.

Additional Information: This is a 30-hour per week exempt, salaried position reporting to the Lead Pastor. The actual number of hours required during any given week are those needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. This position has flexible hours to accommodate events, camps and other activities on some evenings and weekends. The director will work on Sundays. Employment at Vista Ridge UMC provides paid vacation, sick leave and paid holidays.
