Job Description

University Park United Methodist Church, located in Dallas, is a “big table” church welcoming a broad spectrum of our community into a community of faith whose vision is to embody the love of Jesus for the good of our communities. We are seeking a Minister to Children and Families with a proven record of nurturing children and their families in the Christian faith while broadening the ministry’s impact throughout the mission field. 

UPUMC continues to invest in children, students and their families. Earlier this year the church opened a new youth ministry center and launched Upper Room, a modern, intergenerational Sunday evening worship service, while work to update our children’s chapel, family atrium and children’s ministry spaces is anticipated to begin in November. 

Focus:

  • Oversee and develop experiences and curriculum for children
  • Pastoral care and presence for children and their parents
  • Lead children’s moments in Sunday morning 11AM service
  • Recruit and develop a volunteer team
  • Organize children’s curriculum and communicate regularly with Sunday School leadership
  • Communication with children’s families (both regular/ongoing and special events/opportunities)

Responsibilities 

Include but are not limited to:

Formation

  • Recruit and manage Sunday School teacher volunteers
    • Schedule teachers on a rotational, seasonal basis 
    • Provide teacher trainings at regular intervals
    • Communicate regularly with teachers around curriculum, schedules, special events, etc
  • Research and choose developmentally appropriate curriculum that deepens the spiritual formation of children in the Wesley tradition
  • Organize Generation 2 Generation (5th Sunday) intergenerational gatherings
  • Develop consistent and connected programming for Sunday afternoon 
  • Connect with families to encourage child participation 
  • Promote and attend North Texas Conference camping opportunities (Camp Bible, Summer Camp)
  • Plan and implement quarterly fellowship events for children and families (can be coordinated with youth events if appropriate)
  • Develop summer programming calendar 
  • Build relationships with Weekday School families and aid in their spiritual formation

Worship

  • Provide leadership for the children’s message
  • Participate in acolyte/children’s worship leadership training (run by Music Ministry)
  • Develop ways for children to meaningfully engage in corporate worship
  • Coordinate with families around baptisms and birth announcements
  • Lead special children’s events in worship (3s and 3rd grade Bibles, backpack blessings, etc) in coordination with worship and age level ministry staff
  • Support Children’s Choir performances (led by worship staff)

Administration

  • Create and maintain a budget for Children’s Programmatic Ministries 
  • Provide regular communication about upcoming events/opportunities to UPUMC families 
  • Coordinate with and support the VBS leadership team
  • Supervisory responsibilities include overseeing the childcare team (scheduling, payroll, hiring)
  • Delegating administrative and programmatic tasks to the Family Ministries Assistant (shared with Youth Ministry) 
  • Attend All-Staff meeting and Worship meeting weekly
