Job Description

Spring Valley UMC seeks  Church Accountant  to direct all financial and business responsibilities for the church. The Church Accountant provides accounting, payroll, disbursement, budgeting, reporting and other financial and business support services essential for the operation of the church. 

This position is 32 hour per week.  It is an Administrative Staff position and reports to the pastor.


  • Produce all aspects of financial accounting, analysis and reporting including the generation and maintenance of all financial reports (monthly, quarterly and annual), giving records and account reconciliations for the church and the Spring Valley Foundation
  • Receive, verify, record and process invoices and purchase requisitions, accurately recording  all transactions in the accounting system and budget documents
  • Prepare and process check requests on a weekly basis and ensure proper supporting documentation and required authorizing signatures.  Maintain system for retention of all supporting disbursement documents
  • Process disbursements in accordance with the budget
  • Prepare payrolls, make payroll tax deposits, and prepare and file all payroll tax returns and Form W-2’s for the church and the Preschool
  • Assist in the production of the annual budget and prepare budget reports as requested by each committee
  • Inform staff of ministry budget balances
  • Count and deposit weekly church offerings according to church guidelines
  • Post and maintain the stewardship pledge reporting system
  • Produce and mail semi-annual congregational giving statements
  • Facilitate and expedite a greater electronic giving platform using Realm software
  • Interface with Vendors as needed
  • Coordinate audits
  • Maintain all contract and lease files
  • Prepare annual Charge Conference Financial Forms
  • Prepare year-end Check out Financial Forms
  • Participate in Staff, Finance and Administrative Council Meetings
  • Coordinate with church volunteer leadership, including the church treasurer, chair of the Finance Committee, and chair of the Trustees
  • Coordinate with the Preschool in their financial operation
  • Maintain system passwords
  • Maintain all human resources documents, not including Background Checks


  • Associates or undergraduate degree in finance or accounting
  • Experience in financial and/or accounting roles

Preferred Skills

  • Basic understanding of non-profit accounting standards
  • Proficient in Excel and general ledger systems
  • Good communication skills
  • Good team player
