Key Relationships: All Church Choirs, Handbells, Congregation, Staff

Purpose of Position: The Minister of Music is responsible to the church and the pastor, developing and promoting the music ministry of the church, and to develop and carry out artistic programming, collaborations and concerts that enhance the mission of the church.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and implement a comprehensive church music program that includes group such as Chancel Choir, Children and Youth Choirs, Praise Team,and the Kessler Ringers.
  • Organize and maintain a performance schedule that includes weekly and High Holiday worship music, non-worship concerts and outreach concerts.
  • Organize all rehearsal schedules.
  • Design each performance, including theme development and integration of guest artists, ensembles, soloists and visual elements.
  • Identify and hire workshop presenters for clinics and workshops.
  • Contract with technicians and musicians for each project.
  • Audition, select and coach soloists when needed.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, and retreats as agreed to by the staff.
  • Assist the pastor and worship staff in planning congregational services of the church and be responsible for selecting the music.
  • Identify message, themes, and collaborations that support the ministry's mission.
  • Research appropriate music for each Sunday.
  • Ensure that music is selected and purchased in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with the Accompanist regarding the rehearsal schedule, tempos and other details as needed.
  • Secure new arrangements and performance rights where appropriate.
  • Promote and focus on the missions of all music ministries
  • Serve as a leader in the worship services, giving direction to the congregational singing choir, and other phases of worship
  • Supervise the work of paid music staff workers and volunteers
  • Conduct music staff meetings, as needed, for the purpose of evaluation and planning
  • Attend Leadership Board meetings.
  • Coordinate the music program with the church calendar.
  • Network with other churches and arts organizations, music ministers, and community groups to increase the visibility of our ministry and to encourage collaboration whenever possible
  • Serve on, and work with church committees as needed.
  • Plan, organize, and promote concerts, choir tours, mission trips, retreats, festivals, workshops, clinics, and other special programs to enhance the music ministry
  • Oversee maintenance of the music library, materials, supplies, musical instruments, and other equipment useful in the music ministry
  • Prepare reports necessary to keep the church fully informed concerning the music ministry.
  • Prepare, with assistance when needed, an annual music budget reflecting the needs of the entire music ministry. Administrate the budget once approved by Leadership Board.
  • Stay informed of denominational goals, emphases, publications, materials, policies, and plans for employing them as they relate to KPUMC
  • Assist other staff members in church-wide events when needed and asked.
  • Assist in the selection and provision of appropriate music for weddings, funerals, special projects, and other church-related activities.
  • Keep informed on current music methods, materials, promotional ideas, and administrative techniques
  • Manage or create social media posts that publicize KPUMC’s music program, and upcoming events.
  • Maintain and update professional competence by attending workshops, classes and conferences
  • Review new choral works and recordings; read professional journals.
  • Attend concerts of other choral organizations

Required Experience and Skills

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience
  • Experience conducting and working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience
  • Interest in and commitment to embracing the mission and ministry
  • Ability to offer strong leadership skills as well as to balance work within a team setting.
  • Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • An ability to work with social media, word processing, e-mail, and internet.
