Job Description

First Rockwall United Methodist Church is a growing congregation located 24 miles east of Dallas that values discipleship, covenant relationships, community and worship.  First Rockwall has several different worship services, including our contemporary service, Open Door.

The Open Door Worship Coordinator will be a person whose responsibilities will be focused in three areas:

  1. Worship design/planning/execution
  2. Team Coordination
  3. Communication


These three focus areas will manifest in a collaborative effort with unique and assigned tasks in the following ways:

  • Report directly to Associate Pastor/Open Door pastor
  • Regular weekly meetings with Open Door pastor and/or lead volunteer team
  • Foster teamwork and trust with Open Door Leadership
  • Worship Design Planning:
    • Work with Open Door pastor to be intentional about worship flow and creative/artistic direction
    • Better incorporate media, technology, lighting, etc. into worship
    • Manage weekly worship production including but not limited to:
      • Sermon brainstorming and fleshing out
      • Creative expression of word throughout entire Sunday service
      • Managing Open Door Band—offering song suggestions, providing them resources they need, keep track of schedules and absences of players, keeping record of songs played and their frequency
    • Create promotional materials for sermon series, liturgical seasons, etc., including any Open Door mail outs
    • Social Media help as needed (including Facebook, Instagram)
  • Sunday Morning Worship:
    • Weekly Sunday Duties:
      • Set up and tear down worship center for service(light candles on altar, set up communion, set out bulletins, ensure chairs have pens, cards, etc.
      • Coordinate leadership participation within service (scripture reading, communion servers, greeters, etc.) prior to each Sunday; keep record of participation
    • Create a systematic way to coordinate volunteers/teams who will:
      • Organize set design changes for worship center
      • Create an atmosphere of hospitality and welcome for both members and guests  (greeter teams, doorstep drop-offs, responsibilities for new member joining, follow-up of visitors)
      • Help with special events
    • Help ensure that people engage  and are utilized in the most thorough way—increasing volunteer base
    • Fill in gaps in worship when possible with self or reliable outsourced persons
    • Utilize planning center or other resources for planning and organizing
  • Open Door Community:
    • Family
      •  Create and organize quarterly, family-friendly community building events and activities to engage more people outside of Sunday morning and worship expressions
    • Mission:
      •  Work with Open Door pastor to create a quarterly mission focus with multiple volunteer opportunities both in and out of worship in consultation with Minister of Missions
      • Maintain and update mission table in the worship center to highlight quarterly mission focus
    • Prayer:
      • Work with Open Door pastor to foster prayer within service in creative and accessible ways 
      • Once a quarter, work with Open Door pastor to create service centered on prayer
      • Maintain prayer walls and turn in private prayer concerns to Pastor of Life Stage Ministries
  • Other duties as assigned


The most important characteristics of the person hired for the Open Door Worship Coordinator Role are:

  • Constantly striving to be a faithful child of God who treats others with love, dignity, and respect
  • Desire to point others to the love of Jesus Christ, above all else
  • Understanding of the role of worship to the church and God’s people
  • Willingness to be a team player and pitch in when and where help is needed
  • Intuitive ability to see what needs to be done; self-starter to achieve those things with minimal prompting
  • Desire to be intentionally invitational and welcome all into the community of Christ
  • Strong administrator proficient in time management

The Open Door Worship Coordinator will be visible (in the office) for 15 hours a week with a flexible schedule. Time off will need to be requested/negotiated, with at least three weeks notice. She or he will receive only three Sundays off annually. Emergencies will be an exception.
