Job Description

The member of the leadership team who plans, develops, coordinates, implements and directs all aspects of the Church’s music ministry. 

Statement of Understanding:  First United Methodist Church The Colony is a religious organization. Reporting Relationship:  Reports to Senior Pastor

Responsibilities

  • Guides the work of all music programs through the year in consultation with the Pastor
    • Schedules and plans all music performances in consultation with the Senior Pastor and Worship committee (including two Sunday worship services and all special programs)
  • Adult choir:
    • Selects music, organizes and directs all rehearsals and performances
    • Creates music program for special services
    • Serves as vocal leader of singing in worship
    • Secures guest musicians and fill-in musicians as needed
    • Ensures choir members keep their robes clean, presentable and ready for use
  • Children’s choirs:
    • Selects music, organizes and either directs or oversee volunteers who direct all rehearsals and performances for Children’s Choirs
    • Secures instrumental accompanists as needed
  • Instrument choirs (adult hand bell, children’s chimes, etc.):
    • Selects music, organizes and either directs or oversee volunteers who direct all rehearsals and performances
    • Creates music program for all special services
    • Secures guest musicians and fill-in musicians as needed
    • Responsible for any special musical needs (instruments, hand bell music stands, etc.)
  • Creates proposed budget and manages all spending and fundraising income
  • Ensures music licenses are properly obtained and are within budget
  • Implements and follows a maintenance/service schedule for all musical instruments
  • Oversees the music library
  • Provides guidance to the church accompanist and puts together music copies each week in preparation for Wednesday choir rehearsals and Sunday morning worship
  • Works closely with the Technical Team and provides lyrics on PowerPoint slides as needed
  • Organizes and oversees all volunteers for the music ministry
  • Coordinates schedule with other departments as needed (i.e. communications, online event requests, childcare, etc.)
  • Attends staff meetings and Administrative Council meetings as required
  • Works cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers, and is an effective team member
  • This position requires being available and physically present at the church facility on certain days (Sundays, during choir practice, staff meetings, worship planning meetings, Administrative Council meetings, Easter, Christmas and other holidays as defined by the Pastor)
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in music or equivalent experience
  • Two years of Choral Conducting desired
  • Capable of vocally leading singing in worship
  • Functional keyboard skills – able to play for sectionals or rehearsal if need be
  • Working knowledge of choral rehearsal techniques and conducting
  • Basic knowledge of copyright laws as they relate to choral church music
  • Strong organizational skills, strong attention to detail, strong communication skills, ability to maintain confidentiality
  • MS Publisher skills preferred but not required
  • Relational, strong people skills, flexible, forward-thinking, able to lead through change

 

Supervisory Responsibility:  This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, although the Music Director does provide guidance to the church accompanist.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

Physical Demands: This is largely a sedentary role; however, some walking, filing and lifting is occasionally required, along with moving light music equipment and chairs.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a part-time position of approximately 25 hours a week. Salary range is $24,000-$30,000 depending on experience.

  • Submission of video samples of choral conducting and singing in worship (good, clear audio required)
  • Formal interview with Music Director Search Committee
  • 30 minute rehearsal with Chancel Choir
  • Vote of approval by Staff Parish Relations Committee
