Job Description

The Director of Children’s Choirs of the First United Methodist Church of Rockwall is excited about sharing the love of Christ through music with our children through song, instrumental music, drama/skits and other creative avenues. In partnership with the Director of Music and Arts and the Director of Children’s Ministry, the Director of Children’s Choirs will lead multiple levels of children’s participation in the music ministry of the church.

Schedule: Part-time, non-exempt, less than 15 hours (typically 7-10) per week including Sundays 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Compensation: Competitive; commensurate with experience

Reports to the Director of Music and Arts


  • Develop a high-quality, spirited, inviting music ministry for preschool and elementary children within the congregation

  • Plan and develop a children’s choir program in coordination with the Director of Music and Arts with regular, publicized rehearsals and program times for two “semesters” (Fall and Spring) to coincide with the school calendar and church program calendar

  • Recruit choir membership of children (pre-K through 6th grade) who will gather weekly for music teaching and development as well as fellowship

  • Direct children in singing skill- and age-appropriate music and performance materials in Sunday worship three to four times per semester

  • Work with other music staff and children’s ministry staff to achieve integrated music opportunities for young children

  • Select, rehearse and present a bi-annual children’s music presentation for the church community, Advent and Spring

  • Recruit and nurture volunteers and assistants to help in rehearsals and with multiple details of music productions

  • Maintain current mail/email/phone contact information of parents and participants

  • Maintain a children’s music library at the church for future use

  • Other tasks as needed


  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Currently enrolled, or completed a degree program in a music-related field, or equivalent experience leading children in music required
  • Must be available to work Sunday evenings from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise patience required, responding calmly to overwhelming and difficult situations
  • Strong communication skills required, communicating effectively with adults and small children
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Strong creativity and working knowledge of learning styles preferred
  • High energy and physical stamina required; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for long periods and sit down on the ground easily
  • Proficient in multitasking, remaining calm despite frequent interruptions
