Job Description

Christ United Methodist Church (Christ United) is a 5000-member church filled with talented, passionate, caring people with hearts for ministry and mission. The Director of Finance manages the financial practices of the church so that the church may live out its mission to love God, serve others, and transform lives.

The Director of Finance is responsible for oversight of the financial activities of Christ United, an organization with an annual budget of approximately $4.5 million. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position reporting directly to the Executive Director.


1) Oversee day-to-day financial operations of the church

  • Interact with church members/visitors in a timely and caring manner
  • Supervise and monitor Finance Assistant, providing support as needed
  • Serve as a back-up for the Finance Assistant when needed
  • Manage contributions and accounts payable
  • Review expenses for legitimacy and proper coding
  • Review bank deposits, monitor cash flow and bank balance including transfers from money market to checking account
  • Review income areas and compare to budget plan
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal financial information of members and donors
  • Maintain relationships with external lenders

2) Accounting and financial reporting functions

  • Prepare monthly financial statements for finance committee, Senior Pastor, and Executive Director
  • Prepare monthly accrual journal entries
  • Reconcile all accounts: checking, money market, stocks, accounts payable, fund accounts
  • Prepare annual budget in collaboration with Executive Director-monitor results and analyze variances
  • Support Executive Director, Senior Minister and Director of Communications with annual stewardship campaign including entering pledges and preparing reconciliation.
  • Complete financial reporting required by the Conference
  • Facilitate audit processes and provide support and information as required by the auditors
  • Develop financial analysis tools that indicate organizational financial health
  • Oversee cashflow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Provide monthly cash position reports to Executive Director
  • Manage all banking relationships, bank accounts, and cash balances, and ensure timely completion of bank reconciliations for all accounts
  • Maintain Giving process through ShelbyNext Giving
  • Process contributions through PayPal
  • Record and reconcile registrations received through ShelbyNext
  • Record Children’s Discovery Center (“Preschool”) ACH tuition receipts
  • Prepare Preschool adjusting entries and monthly reports
  • Prepare Sports and Recreation Center’s adjusting entries and monthly reports
  • Administer multiple credit card accounts

3) Analysis and strategy

  • Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial information to Executive Director and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations
  • Complete analysis of financial results: develop recommendations (strategic and tactical)
  • Develop and maintain capital budgets for any capital campaigns
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions, including the chart of accounts, and written policies and procedures
  • Enhance and implement financial and accounting systems, processes, tools, and control systems
  • Special projects and all other duties as assigned by Executive Director
  • Develop annual budget, monitor results, analyzing variances

4) Payroll

  • Submit payroll through payroll service
  • Prepare and record payroll entry
  • Reconcile hourly employees
  • Manage pension adjustments including adding and removing employees


  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or business
  • Master’s Degree in accounting or business (preferred)
  • Extensive years of practical experience in accounting and financial practices – minimum 5 years
  • Experience with ShelbyNext software a plus
  • Experience in non-profit and fund accounting a plus


  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial analysis skills
  • High ethical standards
  • Sound knowledge, analytical ability, good judgment and strong “big picture” strategic focus while simultaneously maintaining an operational, implementation and detail-oriented perspective
  • Strong attention to accuracy and timeliness off work ensuring maximum work productivity
  • Concern for learning and making improvements in financial aspects of the church
  • Team player with excellent written and verbal skills
  • Excellent computer software skills (excel, accounting software, etc....)
  • The ability to learn the church’s financial and membership software
  • Able to juggle many tasks at same time
  • High levels of persistence, curiosity, and enthusiasm

Other requirements for this position:

  • Biennial (once every two years) Background Check (required for all positions)
