Job Description

The purpose of the staff position of Minister to Families is to provide oversight of the children’s and youth ministries (birth to 12th grade). This position works to ensure a smoothly operating, safe, and effective ministry that includes working with volunteers and employees in this ministry, and care for those participating in these ministries.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Theological education/training preferred.  Additional requirements would be teaching experience or ministerial student status or comparable related experience and/or training


  • The successful candidate must be a Christian and fully support the philosophy and theology of the United Methodist Church and Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
  • Strong Biblical knowledge and experience in teaching/leading Bible Studies and/or Sunday School
  • Understanding of United Methodist theology and traditions
  • The ability to work efficiently and effectively in team situations as well as the ability to work independently is required.
  • Must possess solid time management skills and organizational abilities. The ability to coordinate several activities at once and to quickly analyze and resolve specific problems is important.
  • The ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships in English and preferably also Spanish, conveying a genuine concern for all individuals, and a desire to provide exceptional service, is essential for this position.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational materials. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to many different ages and types of children. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, staff, or congregation.
  • The ideal candidate should be creative, have a passion for children and youth, be high energy, hardworking, and have the ability to motivate others. Should be detail oriented, flexible, and decisive with the ability to organize and coordinate work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.


Children’s and Youth Ministry

  • Regularly review the children’s and youth ministries and the plan for intentional faith development at CHUMC to make sure it is fulfilling our United Methodist Church mission of “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” and forming youth as disciples who, as the United Methodist General Rule of Discipleship states, “witness to Jesus Christ in world, and follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”
  • Work primarily with the Senior Pastor and the Children’s and Youth Councils to plan for the intentional faith development of children and youth and plan the yearly calendar, including ongoing activities and special events, and budget for each year to help facilitate as we "Lead (children, youth, and their families) to commit their lives to God through baptism by water and the Spirit and profession of faith in Jesus Christ," and "Nurture (children, youth, and their families) in Christian living through worship, the sacraments, spiritual disciplines, and other means of grace, such as Wesley’s Christian conferencing, " as stated in para. 122 in our Book of Discipline.
  • Attend Youth and Children’s Council meetings or present committee overseeing these ministries.
  • Lead Youth Council meetings along with a youth co-chair. Work with the Youth Council and Nominations and Leadership Development to fill adult and youth vacancies on the council.
  • Prepare and oversee annual children’s and youth budgets working with the Children’s and Youth Councils and Finance Committee. Oversee and manage children’s and youth designated funds account working with the Youth Council and Finance Committee. Organize, plan, implement and lead the fundraising for children’s and youth camps, and other youth ministry needs.
  • Work with the office manager to ensure all volunteers have passed through the MinistrySafe application process, both the background check and the online training, and that CHUMC volunteers repeat this process as required by the North Texas Conference MinistrySafe guidelines. Ensure that all children’s and youth events are executed within the North Texas Conference MinistrySafe guidelines.
  • Ensure that we provide radical hospitality to all families entering our church.
  • Children’s and Youth Sunday School/Bible Study – Establish, review, and maintain programs. Review and select curriculum. Recruit and train teachers. Schedule all teachers. Maintain a list of all available subs so teachers can find a substitute when needed. Periodically participate in the teaching of children and youth.
  • Teach youth Sunday School and lead Sunday youth group.
  • Organize, plan, implement and lead confirmation providing some, but not all, of the instruction for appropriately aged youth and other youth who have not yet passed through confirmation class.
  • Work with Children’s and Youth Councils, volunteers, and the Senior Pastor to provide support to the children and youth by planning for someone to attend occasional extracurricular activities outside of church (e.g. sporting events, recitals, performances, etc.)
  • Be attentive to the lives of children and youth and their families, and be able to provide Pastoral Care when needed by making hospital/home visits and following up with families in their times of need. Inform the Senior Pastor when children and youth family’s needs require further care and support.
  • Plan for children and youth to attend Bridgeport camps in the summer with consideration recruit volunteers to serve as camp chaperones, and implement fundraising to cover the costs of our camp attendees. The Minister to Families is not necessarily required to attend all days of all camps. Comp time may be provided by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee based on the number of camp days attended.
  • Establish and maintain a plan for communications, including text and email, website, church announcements, bulletin boards, word of mouth and social media to inform those within and beyond CHUMC, especially, parents, volunteers, children and youth of ministry events
  • Childcare – recruit and screen workers. Ensure adequate staffing for the number of children served.
  • Work with volunteers to organize the classrooms and ensure their cleanliness and safety. Develop a ministry track so that a child’s and youth’s progress follows logical and grade-sensitive exposure to the Bible.
  • Attendance – Keep an ongoing record of attendance, both of workers, children, and youth, and relay that information as directed. Follow up as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.


  • Regularly attend worship service
  • Periodically participate in teaching the children at Children’s Time during worship
  • Help lead Children’s Worship when the Community Engagement and Children’s Worship Minister is unavailable.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the annual observance of Children’s Sabbath

Project Transformation

  • Provide supervisory coverage for Project Transformation as needed.
  • Workwith the Community Engagement and Children’s Worship Minister to build a relational bridge between CHUMC and the families of Project Transformation.
  • Attend monthly Family Fun Nights.
  • Greet families at the door at least once a week.
  • Eat with the children at least once a week.

Special Occasions – responsible for overall planning and supervision, recruiting volunteers, publicity, buying supplies, room set-up. Examples of special occasions are listed below although this list is not necessarily static as events may be added or dropped over time.

  • Easter/Palm Sunday Children’s Event

  • Children’s Sabbath
  • VBS, if held at CHUMC
  • Christmas Workshop
  • Advent activities

Administration and Communication

  • Attend weekly staff meetings. Attend the following meetings as scheduled (generally each meets once a month) – Children’s Council, Youth Council, and Council on Ministries
  • Coordinate ministry area activities with overall church calendar in tandem with other staff.
  • Responsible for keeping website information for ministry areas up to date and accurate.
  • Responsible for weekly bulletin and newsletter announcements/articles as appropriate.
