Job Description

The purpose of the staff position of Minister to Families is to provide oversight of the ministry to families (birth through 12th grade) at Chapel Hill UMC. This position works to ensure a smoothly operating, safe and effective program that includes working with volunteers and employees involved in this ministry and care for the those participating in these ministries.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Additional requirements would be teaching experience or ministerial student status or comparable related experience and/or training

Skills and Abilities

  • The successful candidate must be a Christian and fully support the philosophy and theology of the United Methodist Church and leadership team and Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
  • The ability to work efficiently and effectively in team situations as well as the ability to work independently is required.
  • Must possess solid time management skills and organizational abilities. The ability to coordinate several activities at once and to quickly analyze and resolve specific problems is important.
  • The ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships in English and in Spanish (preferred), conveying a genuine concern for all individuals, and a desire to provide exceptional service, is essential for this position.
  • Ability to play guitar and lead modern worship is preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational materials. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to many different ages and types of children. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents, staff, or congregation.
  • The ideal candidate should be creative, have a passion for children and youth, be high energy, hardworking, and have the ability to motivate others. Should be detail oriented, flexible, and decisive with the ability to organize and coordinate work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Duties

Ministry to Families

  • Work primarily with the Family Ministries Council to plan programs and fundraising.
  • Childcare – recruit and screen workers. Ensure adequate staffing for the number of children served, maintaining the Ministry Safe standards among both paid staff and volunteers.
  • Curriculum – review and select curriculum. Organize the classrooms and ensure their cleanliness and safety. Develop a ministry track so that a child’s progress follows logical and grade-sensitive exposure to the Bible.
  • Plan and participate in a weekly gathering with youth for discipleship and fellowship.
  • Attendance – Keep ongoing record of attendance, both of workers and children, and relay that information as directed. Follow up as necessary.
  • Plan and participate in monthly family fellowship on Saturday evenings.
  • Build connections with the families, letting the Senior Pastor know when need for follow up arises.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Minister.

Worship

  • Coordinate Children’s Time during the weekly worship service.
  • Participate in weekly worship planning.
  • Lead music in modern worship gathering for families monthly on Sunday morning. (preferred)
  • Plan and lead children’s worship on non-modern worship Sundays.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the annual observance of Children’s Sabbath.

Project Transformation

  • Be present as the Site Supervisor for Project Transformation two days a week, coordinate with interns on CHUMC campus when in the office. (Three days if unable to lead modern worship)
  • Teach weekly TAG (Talk About God) time with the Project Transformation students and attend Family Fun Nights

Special Occasions – responsible for overall planning and supervision, recruiting volunteers, publicity, buying supplies, room set-up. Examples of special occasions are listed below although this list is not necessarily static as events may be added or dropped over time.

  • Promotion Sunday/Teacher Dedication
  • Presentation of Bibles to 3rd graders
  • Easter/Palm Sunday Children’s Event
  • Christmas Workshop
  • Advent activities

Administration and Communication

  • Attend weekly staff meetings. Attend the following meetings as scheduled (generally each meets once a month) – Family Ministries Council and Council on Ministries
  • Oversee budget and expenditures for the children, youth, and family ministry. Prepare and submit annual budgets to Family Ministries Council and Church Council for review and approval
  • Coordinate ministry area activities with overall church calendar in tandem with other staff.
  • Responsible for keeping website information for ministry areas up to date and accurate.
  • Responsible for weekly bulletin and newsletter announcements/articles as appropriate.
