Job Description

The Director of Worship is responsible for the leadership, development and growth (spiritually and numerically) of the music ministry and worship for Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Duties   

  • Prepare and coordinate Sunday worship and congregational music for the 10:00 service through a variety of sources. Prepare and copy music sets for each instrumentalist.  Work with the visual/audio technician at 9:00 in creating a balanced and blended sound for all instruments and vocalists.

  • Choose music, lead rehearsals and conduct the adult choir for their weekly role in the 10:00 am. Worship service. 

  • Work with the Ministerial staff to recruit youth and adults for choir, band, and/or AV team members as part of worship ministries.

  • Work with the visual/audio technician in overseeing the accuracy of text for visual presentation.

  • Be present at Praise Band rehearsals to prepare the musical accuracy of congregational music.

  • Assist, provide resources and encourage the volunteer director of the children’s choir, and represent the needs and capabilities of the children’s choir in the periodic worship planning sessions with the pastor. 

  • Facilitate communication between the various music groups. 

  • Assist with maintenance, use, and set-up of sound equipment. 

  • Meet with the pastor regularly to report the progress of the music ministry and to plan worship.

  • Arrange for repair and tuning of all keyboard instruments within the church building as necessary.

  • Coordinate Sunday Service requirements with Altar Guild, Worship Host, Liturgists and Communion leader.

  • Provide leadership for the worship team by setting agenda items and meeting times to gather their input on how to improve Sunday worship.

  • Attend staff meetings when possible 

  • Oversees AV Team, Worship Host, and instructs them on their duties

  • Responsible for maintaining and recruitment of scholarship singers. 

  • Oversee scholarship singers are invoicing and getting paid monthly.

  • Hire and communicate with all guest musicians.

Qualifications  

  • Be proficient in voice and music conducting.

  • Be skilled in Choral Directing and selecting appropriate music.

  • Be proficient in keyboard.

  • Be able to listen to and communicate with people of all ages and musical backgrounds. 

  • Be interested in a wide range of musical experiences. 

  • Be able to work with volunteers and teams. 

  • Be skilled in researching music issues and programs related to people in the congregation and community. 

  • Be skilled in researching issues involved in worship. 

  • Be sensitive to what makes worship effective.

  • Be knowledgeable of copyright law and CCLI Licensing Guidelines.
