Job Description

The Preschool Sunday School Teacher at Custer Road United Methodist Church (CRUMC) shall be a person of genuine and deepening Christian character, willing to grow as a loyal participant of a ministry team, able to work, communicate well, and cultivate trust with other Staff members, volunteers, congregants and vendors.

Purpose The Preschool Sunday School Teacher shall be responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where young children (birth to 5 years) can learn about God’s love. This role involves planning and leading age-appropriate lessons, activities, and worship experiences that introduce foundational Christian principles in a fun and interactive way.

Hours:  The Preschool Sunday School Teacher position is a non-exempt part-time position and is governed by CRUMC’s Employee Handbook. The expected time commitment will be four (4) hours on Sunday mornings (8 a.m. to noon) with some additional planning hours required during the week. The Sunday morning commitment may be extended to 2 p.m. if needed to assist Custer Road en Español. Hourly compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Staff Supervision:  Reports to the Director of CRKids.

Responsibilities

In conformity with CRUMC’s policies and procedures, as well as those contained in the United Methodist Book of Discipline, the position responsibilities will include those generally described below, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Deliver engaging and interactive lessons each Sunday that captivate children's attention and foster their spiritual growth.
  • Create a welcoming, safe, and nurturing environment for all children while maintaining an orderly classroom environment that encourages learning and respectful behavior.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to keep them informed about their child's progress, classroom activities, and upcoming events.
  • Collaborate with the Director of CRKids and other team members to ensure a consistent and cohesive program.
  • Follow all church policies and procedures related to child safety, including check-in/check-out procedures, emergency protocols, and reporting any concerns to the appropriate authorities.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions and work closely with other Sunday School teachers and volunteers to coordinate activities, share resources, and support one another in ministry.
  • Pray with and for the children, helping them develop their understanding of prayer and faith.
  • Attend occasional church events, meetings, and training sessions as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be a person of deep personal Christian faith and integrity.
  • Must have a passion for sharing God’s love with children, with a heart for ministry and a desire to see children grow in their faith.
  • Experience working with young children, preferably in a teaching or ministry role.
  • Ability to lift and carry infants and toddlers.
  • Ability to engage in physical activities with young children, including sitting on the floor, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate teaching methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and other team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and practice discretion in all communications.
  • A positive demeanor, demonstrating grace and patience in interactions with Staff, volunteers, and congregants.
  • Ability to handle conflict with grace.
  • Must pass a background check, complete Ministry Safe training and complete CPR/AED/First Aid training.
